Abstrac t -MIPS is a m i c r o r o b o t w i t h a p a r a l l e l m e c h a n i c a l a r c h i t e c t u r e h a v i n g t h r e e d e g r e e s o f f r e e d o m ( o n e t r a n s l a t i o n a n d t w o o r i e n t a t i o n s ) t h a t a l l o w f ine p o s i t i o n i n g o f a s u r g i c a l t o o l . T h e p u r p o s e o f M I P S is t o a c t as a n a c t i v e w r i s t a t t h e t i p o f a n e n d o s c o p e a n d t o p r o v i d e t o t h e s u r g e o n a n a c c u r a t e t o o l t h a t m a y f u r t h e r m o r e of fe rs a p a r t i a l f o r c e f e e d b a c k . T h e c u r r e n t p r o t o t y p e has a d i a m e t e r o f 7 m m for a l e n g t h o f 2 . 5 c m a n d i n c l u d e s al l t h e n e c e s s a r y h a r d w a r e .
